Hylands House is widely regarded as Chelmsford’s jewel in its crown. Amongst its 12 different owners, it has seen two MPs, two Chairmen of a nationally important brewery, a Merchant Banker and diplomat, local squires and JPs, an explorer with Ernest Shackleton, and now a local authority.
The extraordinary restoration is ultimately due to successive political administrations and their officers at Chelmsford Borough (now City) Council who sanctioned phase after phase of funding, supported by English Heritage, the Friends of Hylands House, and latterly the Heritage Lottery Fund.
For the first time a new comprehensive historical book is available for sale exploring it’s fascinating history and remarkable restorative journey. Either purchase online or in person in the Hylands Estate Information Point to avoid delivery fees.
