Events for 9 February
Activities
This month we’ve planned some of our activities along a theme that is close to our hearts – Weddings!
February is not just National Wedding Month, but Sunday 9 February is World Marriage Day, and we have arts and crafts in the Banqueting Room, a slideshow of Hylands weddings in the Small Dining Room, and a social history exhibition in the Library all about Hylands weddings and Royal visits from our past.
Storyteller Mike Dodsworth returns with his popular story sessions. You’ll find him in the Drawing Room at 10.30am 11.30am, 12.30pm and 2pm.
In the Terrace Room, we’re ready to welcome back our colleagues from Chelmsford Museum who will have plenty for you to learn, see and do. Handle real objects from their archaeology collection, meet a member of the Oaklands House household and learn more about its past, spot the difference between Chelmsford then and now, discover more about the witch trials from Chelmsford and Essex, and make your own Saxon brooch!
If you are coming down for a tour of Hylands House with one of our volunteers, don’t forget, this starts promptly at 10am and 1pm.
Food & Craft Market
We’re welcoming Essex Foodies to Hylands Estate from Sunday 9 February! This independent market offers a fantastic range of local food and drinks vendors, freshly grown produce, and crafty items.
The market will provide a regular platform for small, independent and local traders to sell their products and promote their brand. It first started as Writtle Foodies in October 2023, following the discontinuation of Writtle Farmer’s Market earlier that summer. Initially based at Writtle Village Green, the market quickly thrived and became well-known locally for its delicious fare and high-quality handmade products from diverse traders.
We can’t wait for their first market on our front lawn! Of course, you can also enjoy the Hot Box DJ set outside in the market whilst you’re here.
The Stables
Our resident artists throw open their studio doors and welcome you to see into their working spaces – explore upstairs as well as downstairs!
Hot Box Live provide the tunes in The Stables courtyard. Join them for live music from 11am.
Browse items #MadeAtHylands in the Artist Shop and uncover treasures in the Friends of Hylands House second-hand bookshop.
Visit the Stables Information Point and pick up your handset to explore the Pleasure Gardens in a brand-new way! Our Hylands History & Gardens multimedia tour will be available for you to hire or scan the QR code and listen along with our new tour about the Estate and how it came to be.
Our popular café The Deli will be open at The Stables all day!
During our Open Estate Days, parking charges are in effect. If you are a Chelmsford resident, you qualify for a discount on these charges. Find out how to register here.
